Brentwood Celebrates Unity, Culture, and Freedom at 2nd Annual Juneteenth Event
City Park came alive on Thursday, June 19, as the Brentwood community gathered for the city’s 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration, an unforgettable evening dedicated to honoring freedom, heritage, and togetherness.
From the first note of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” to the electric finale from the legendary Digital Underground, this year’s event was a joyful tribute to the resilience and rich cultural legacy of the African American community. With food, music, history, and connection on full display, City Park became a vibrant space for reflection and celebration.
The event kicked off at 4:00 PM with an opening prayer by Pastors Christopher and Nakia Foster, followed by remarks from elected officials and heartfelt performances from Virtuous Voices, Bronze Girl Productions West African Dance, and spoken word artist Monique McCoy.
Dance and movement brought contagious energy to the stage, especially with Stepz Dance Fitness leading interactive routines and an inspiring “Boots on the Ground” moment alongside Vice Mayor Pierson. The evening also featured powerhouse musical acts, including The Edwins Brothers and a crowd-pleasing headline performance from Digital Underground.
Food, Family & Freedom
Local flavor was front and center thanks to a delicious lineup of food trucks curated by the Foodie Crew. Visitors indulged in everything from lobster rolls and Cajun specialties to soul food, desserts, and fresh fruit smoothies. Fan favorites included:
- Cousins Main Lobster
- The Craving Cajun
- The Fry Boys
- Daisy’s Desserts
- Fruitopia
- Travieza Latin Flavors
- Lizetta’s Southern Soul Food
- Loretta’s Kitchen
- Roadside Rotisserie
- MBM Potatoes and Corn
In addition to food and live entertainment, attendees explored a range of community booths, educational resources, and kid-friendly activities. Brentwood Library’s Storywalk added a literary touch to the festivities, while the American Red Cross hosted a blood drive at the Community Center to promote giving back.
Freedom Walk Downtown
The Downtown Brentwood Freedom Walk brought a unique historical journey to life, inviting attendees to collect stamps at participating businesses while learning significant facts about African American history. Completed stamp cards were entered for a chance to win prizes, turning a day of learning into a citywide celebration of culture and commerce.
We are deeply grateful to all the performers, vendors, volunteers, and residents who made this year’s Juneteenth celebration a success. This annual event continues to grow as a space where Brentwood comes together to honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape a future rooted in unity and joy.
